Cooking can be so relaxing - when the work surface is at an optimal height for you and you snip the vegetables in a comfortable position. How to find the right height? Interior designer Ulrich Weinkath explains what matters.
Too high or too low? If the working surface of your kitchen is not at the optimum height, both will not do your back well in the long run and will inevitably lead to discomfort. But how do you find the ideal height for the kitchen worktop and thus for a relaxed cooking position? Ulrich Weinkath of Plan W explains: "It's totally simple. The ergonomically correct height can be easily determined for each person with the help of the golden section. "
Since the arm length is individual for each, the perfect standing height does not depend on the size of the body. It is rather a relationship question. "Stand on your bare feet, leaning lightly against the door frame and measure the distance from the floor to the small ball of the wrist ankle. The work surface should ideally be at this height, "explains Weinkath.
"The standard dimensions of kitchen manufacturers often differ only minimally from the individually perfect measure, but sometimes that's enough
for stubborn muscle tension or permanent discomfort, "says the expert about customers who would sometimes realize with a new kitchen that something was wrong with the height of the old ones. An adaptation is actually no great effort, because: "The small differences to standard dimensions can be easily hidden in the socket."
And as is so often the case with unequal couples everything is a matter of compromise readiness: "They just meet in the middle", suggests Weinkath.
The ideal counter height can also be easily determined, explains the skilled carpenter Weinkath: "It all depends on what kind of stool is taken. Because in order to be able to sit properly, the right shoulder and wrist relationship is important. Sit on the stool and let your arms hang relaxed. At best, the counter should be exactly at the level of your elbow so that you do not fall into the hollow back or make a hump. In the end, you usually land somewhere between 108 and 112 centimeters in the height of a counter - at a working height in the kitchen between 88 and 91 centimeters. "
